Reporting child abuse in South Africa

Under the Children's Act 38 of 2005 and the Sexual Offences Act, certain professionals are legally required to report suspected abuse. Anyone can — and should — report concerns.

  1. 1Ensure the child is safe and away from immediate harm.
  2. 2Listen calmly. Believe the child. Do not interrogate or promise secrecy.
  3. 3Contact a designated child protection organisation, a social worker, or SAPS.
  4. 4Complete Form 22 (notification to the Department of Social Development) where applicable.
  5. 5Follow up — request a case number and the name of the social worker assigned.
